Located in the heart of Hertfordshire, southern England, A.J & C.I Snell Farm is one of the few true icons of English country life, a real paradise where people, berries, and nature live together in perfect harmony.
Whilst carrying out the screeding for an 80sq.m floor area on behalf of Accent Innovation Ltd. – a small renovation contractor yet one of the most reliable and responsible builders we’ve ever had the pleasure to work with – we understood one thing: for farmers like Anthony and Christine Snell, the owners of the farm, going green isn’t just a flash in the pan; it’s something crucially important, something they’ve gladly embraced, knowing that the “little things” they do today will have a significant positive impact on the entire ecosystem.
The project involved the installation of a screed layer, applied to a depth of 75mm. Since the farm owners wanted to use the area as soon as possible, their main concern was that they would have to wait at least 110 days for the screed to dry completely. After a detailed discussion with the main contractor and farm owners, we decided to use a fast-drying, environmentally friendly screed formulation.
Fast drying screed has some great characteristics, including:
- quick drying times, ranging from 7 to 21 days;
- low shrinkage rates, reducing the risk of cracking and curling even when used in large bays;
- compatibility with different cementitious formulations;
- great versatility (suitable for bonded, unbonded, and floating screed constructions, with or without underfloor heating, and a variety of floor finishes, ranging from wood to carpet, tiles, and linoleum);
- eco-friendliness (superior thermal conductivity and reduced thicknesses).
We completed the project ahead of time and achieved finer levelness and flatness tolerances than indicated in project specifications. As a result, the main contractor was able to lay the entire tile floor without using any self-levelling compound to correct discrepancies.
