Updates to the Building Regulations mean improved insulation levels and U values in the external envelope, including floors, to cut CO2 emissions, but for the screeding industry, this is not the main issue. “The main contention in the industry is protection of screeds once they have been installed,” says Spencer Warner, managing director of High Wycombe-based specialist CSC Screeding, which has created a blog – www.screedprotection.com – to explain the difference between curing and dry times, strength gain, walk on time and floor protection. Access time between setting of screed and first light foot traffic ranges between 24 and 48 hours, although fast-drying screeds can cut this time to 12 hours. Despite this improved drying time, some areas of the industry – in particular the housebuilders – continue to move away from wet trades, such as screeds, on site.
